History: Early history, from Versailles fandom wiki

At Versailles, Liselotte struggles some with finding her footing among the French courtiers. Her marriage to Philippe causes tension between herself and the newly returned Chevalier de Lorraine, while her eccentric demeanor and bald honesty makes it difficult for her to make a good connection with the women at court. While she surrounds herself with good maids and maintains a decent outlook on her situation, it isn't until the Chevalier's jealousy is redirected from her to someone new that she begins to find an ally in her husband's lover. Eventually, Philippe is sent to war, and Liselotte, now pregnant, is left to navigate the court with only her own wits and the Chevalier's assistance.

While Philippe is away, the two become fast friends and in league together. She gives birth to her son, Philippe Charles, and the two dote on him in the first months of his birth. However, with the ascendency of Madame de Maintenon, King Louis's newest lover who views both Liselotte and the Chevalier as threats to her power with the king, Liselotte's son is taken from her and removed from the castle. Further attempts for intimacy with Philippe are thwarted, and the three of them briefly fall into a frustrated lovelessness. As tensions at court rise with Philippe's distraction over a mysterious prisoner at the Bastille and Maintenon's insistence at the ousting of the Protestants at court, Liselotte finds herself torn between a distant husband and reckless friend, finally confronting King Louis after the Chevalier is arrested for helping to expatriate Protestants from France.
Personality:
  • Honesty and Integrity. Liselotte maintains an atmophere of companionship and close confidence with the people she keeps close to herself, making herself an available shoulder to lean on. She also does all she can in her limited capacity to improve lives of people at court. Throughout her time at Versailles, she does her best to avoid the darker mechinations and intrigue of the salons. She reviles Montespan for her tendency to place herself ahead of all others, most noteable for her tendency toward rumor-mongering and catty behavior, and does all she can to maintain the good graces of as many people as possible. This makes her a confidant for people such as the Queen, and, once they have made themselves friends, the Chevalier, and makes her prone to speaking her mind on matters which do not necessarily concern her or require her input.
  • Compassionate. Liselotte's kind nature and nurturing tendency makes her empathetic and compassionate to the plights around her, particularly to those that bring their cares and woes to her in confidence. She cares for Sophie after she is wed and her first night as a married woman goes terribly; she advocates for the Queen and the Chevalier in all ways that she is able; and she supports the plight of the Protestants at court despite having renounced her own Protestant faith to convert to Catholicism to marry Philippe. Her compassion and empathy often make her passionate, but also deeply understanding of the struggles of multiple sides of a situation, such as Montespan bringing in an artist to the salon who had previously painted lurid art of Maintenon; or the frustrations of both Philippe and his eldest daughter over an impending marriage to the King of Spain and the duties required to assure that she was a virgin before the wedding could take place.
  • Naivete. Liselotte was born and raised in the world of royalty and aristocracy and has known a life of privilege. She has also been shielded from many of the darker aspects of even this world, given a favorite position of lush, romanticized notions of the what life is like. Even as her understanding of some of these darker realities have crept in, Liselotte maintains her bright outlook on the world. At times, her trust in others and compassion are used against her in this aspect, as when the Queen convinces her that she must travel to Spain due to the health of the King of Spain, her brother; or when the Chevalier discovers the paintings of Maintenon and brings them to the salon - though Liselotte partakes of the teasing as well, this is a byproduct of her confidance with the Chevalier rather than her nature as a vindictive person, having originally tried to send the artist of the painting away from Versailles.
  • Stubbornness. Liselotte has a tendency towards stubbornness and inflexibility when she has set her mind to something. Generally, her tendency toward kindness and honesty makes her an open person; however, in certain areas, she will dig in her heels and refuse to be moved. She is most unmoveable about her family, of which she also includes the Chevalier due to his close intimate companionship with Philippe and her own friendship with him. When she feels that her family is threatened, from within or without, she can become not only stubborn and icy, but also particularly vicious in her reactions to those who would threaten them. Though not a violent person, Liselotte will often refuse to be moved or swayed, allowing only the will of her husband or the King to dissuade her from course - and often not without obvious displeasure over their attempts to discourage her.
  • Sharp Tongue. Even from the outset, Liselotte often exhibits a "speak first, think second" sort of mentality. One might attribute this to her naviete, particularly at her introduction. However, early examples of this exhibit a quick wit, biting humor, and deep frustration over being perceived as weak or otherwise less than. For instance, when she and the Chevalier first meet in season 2, she is seen matching wits with him and acknowledging his position and relation to Philippe; in season 3, when Maintenon critiques her keeping her son in Versailles, she belittles her for attempting to know how to mother without having given birth; she also confronts King Louis on more than one occasion.
